Delhi Police Detain NSUI, Youth Congress Workers Ahead of CJP Tricolour March
Delhi Police detained NSUI and Youth Congress leaders, including Uday Bhanu Chib and Vinod Jakhar, at 4:30 am on October 16 ahead of the CJP Tricolour march in Connaught Place, as Central Park was closed and security was tightened.
The early-morning police action triggered strong resentment within the Congress and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI). Police detained several leaders and workers, including Vinod Jakhar, at around 4:30 am. The Congress strongly objected to the action.
NSUI national president Vinod Jakhar and other workers had been staging a sit-in outside the Parliament Street Police Station throughout the night. They were demanding that an FIR be registered against police officers over the alleged assault on two women organisation members, Athira and Ritu, inside a police bus two days earlier.
Meanwhile, authorities have imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Central Park has been completely closed for two days. Around 6,000 police personnel and 200 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed.
Central Park has been shut ahead of the CJP's Tricolour march, with security heightened in and around the area. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel have been deployed at metro station gates, while barricades have been placed at every entrance to Central Park. Route diversions have also been introduced on some roads leading to Connaught Place.
The traffic police have urged commuters to check the traffic advisory before leaving home. They have advised people to allow sufficient time for their journeys to avoid inconvenience caused by congestion and to use public transport instead of private vehicles wherever possible. The police have also said that additional traffic diversions may be implemented depending on the prevailing situation.
With Central Park closed, security personnel deployed across Connaught Place and restrictions affecting access to the area, the police arrangements ahead of the CJP march have also coincided with the detention of Congress and NSUI workers seeking action over the alleged assault on their colleagues.
